Fire Emblem's combat system is like 'Rock, Paper, Scissors", because each weapon has an advantage against another type, and a weakness to another type. The basic weapon triangle of Fire Emblem is "Lance beats sword, sword beats axe, and axe beats lance". There are other weapons like bows, which aren't at all effected by this weapon triangle though. There is also a magic triangle, but it differs between games.
Characters
The characters in the Fire Emblem series are much like real people (in a way). Each character has their own unique personality and backstory. In most of the "Fire Emblem" games, you start with a small party of characters, and as you advance through the game, you can get many more. Using these characters to fight the enemy lets the gain experience points, and once you get 100, your character will level up. For certain characters as they level up they may have the ability to "promote", which brings the character up to a more powerful class. Sometimes you can use special items on characters to instantly promote them, or sometimes characters promote as part of the story of a particular game.
